The Sports Hangover with Larry Holder and Gus Kattengell is New Orleans newest and freshest sports talk show in years.
Gus plays sports, coaches sports, watches sports, reads about sports, and talks about sports. What does an energetic person with a passion for sports do for a living? The logical answer was to be a sports journalist.
After graduating from Brother Martin High School in New Orleans, Gus took his passion for athletics to the University of Southern Mississippi, where he majored in Broadcast Journalism and minored in Coaching and Athletic Administration. He also participated in sports – intramural sports – where he is proud to say that his team, the Sacks, was intramural champions two years in a row.
Gus knows what he loves and knows where he comes from – Chicago? Even though he is a native New Orleanian, Gus is an avid Chicago Cubs fan. But, being a Cubs fan is like being a Saints fan – up and down, up and down. No wonder Gus loves riding rollercoasters, too
Professionally, Gus has been entrenched in New Orleans sports radio as a journalist reporting on the Hornets, the Saints, Louisiana State University, Prep athletics, and other professional and college sports. He has also served as the Sideline Reporter for the Saints Radio Network for two years and as Sideline Reporter and Color Commentator for the former Arena Football League’s Voodoo Radio Network for three years. Most recently, he has joined the WIST team as the co-host of pre-game and post-game radio broadcasts of Tulane University football and The Sports Hangover heard weekdays from 10 am to 12 pm.
For his consistent efforts, Gus has been rewarded, including two Regional Murrow Awards presented by the Radio-Television News Directors Association for Sports Feature and several Louisiana Associated Press awards for Best Sportscast and Sports Story in the state.
Larry started covering the Saints for CBSSports.com as part of the Web site’s comprehensive league-wide coverage known as Rapid Reports. He’s also written columns about the Saints, LSU and the Sugar Bowl and contributed award-winning journalist and CBSSports.com national columnist Mike Freeman with an in-depth enterprise piece about the still-prevalent womanizing ways of NFL players despite the circumstances surrounding the death of Steve McNair.
You can also add the Hornets to Larry’s coverage as he covers every Hornets home game for NBA.com. Add Larry’s coverage of UNO, Tulane, high school athletics and anything else for The Times-Picayune and Larry has every aspect of local athletics covered.
Larry previously served as the Saints beat writer for the Biloxi (Miss.) Sun Herald from March 2006 to March 2009. He was a member of the Sun Herald staff to win the Pulitzer Prize for public service in 2006. Numerous metro dailies across the country published his articles online including the Wall Street Journal, Houston Chronicle, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Charlotte Observer, Detroit Free Press, San Jose Mercury News, San Diego Times-Union, Contra Costa Times, Orange County Register, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Orlando Sentinel, Arizona Republic, Boston Herald and Raleigh News & Observer among many others.
He’s also a regular contributor on WWL-TV’s “Fourth Down on Four” and has made appearances as a Saints analyst on such national media outlets as ESPN, NFL Network, ESPN Radio and NFL Sirius Radio.
Before covering the Saints, Larry lived covered the Houston Astros and Houston Texans for the Galveston County Daily News. Larry followed the Astros on their historic runs to the 2004 NLCS and the 2005 World Series.
On the personal side, Larry grew up in River Ridge and attended Archbishop Rummel alum. From there, Larry caused way too much havoc at LSU. The school gave him a diploma anyway in print journalism. He’s lucky enough to have found someone willing to put up with him forever as he’s been to his wife, Joni, since March 2009. Sorry single ladies.
